  INTRODUCTION

The International Conference in Malaysia – Indonesia Relations was held for the first time on the 7th – 20th July 2007 at the University of Malaya with the theme “50 years of Independence: Malaysia – Indonesia Relations”. The conference successfully became a platform for 300 participants from Malaysia and Indonesia with 70 presenters coming from the University of Malaya, University of Indonesia, Gadjah Mada University, Andalas University, Padjadjaran University, Udayana University, and Hasanuddin University.

On the last day, a consensus was reached in a meeting attended by all Deans and Dean’s representatives from all participating universities, chaired by Professor. Dr. Redzuan Mohammad Othman, Deputy Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at that time. Consequently, the conference will be held every year, started by the University of Malaya, and later on hosted by a university in Indonesia (Gadjah Mada University being the first one to host the second conference in 2008 in Indonesia).

In 2009, the University of Malaya organized the conference. As in 2007, the conference was held at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences on the 6th until 7th August 2009 with the theme "Nationhood Across the Globalisation'. In 2010, Andalas University, Padang, West Sumatra hosted the conference on 1st until 3rd November with the theme 'Identity and Multicultural Dynamics of Malay in Facing Challenges of the 21st Century’. In the year 2011, with the theme" Strengthening Relations between Malaysia and Indonesia’ the University of Malaya hosted the 5th conference on 12th until 14th July 2011. The 6th conference at the Airlangga University, Surabaya commenced with the theme 'Strengthening Strategic Relations' on July 10-12 2012.

          Now, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Malaya once again is to host the International Conference of Malaysia-Indonesia Relations for the 7th time on 22nd until 24th October 2013 with the theme 'Strengthening Resilience, Enriching Partnerships’.

Conference Objectives

 

This Conference aims to:

  1. promote academic cooperations in the field of culture, arts, and social sciences between the University of Malaya and other universities in Indonesia;
  2. strenghten the relations between Malaysia and Indonesia and impart understanding in the social and cultural aspects of both countries; and
  3. share thoughts and views in overcoming various issues related to the Malaysia – Indonesia relations.
