Islam is not new in China. Through the ancient silk route linking China and the Arab Peninsula, Islam was introduced there since the early days of its conception, flourished and a concrete foundation was laid ever since. Soon, mutual integration between Muslims and local Chinese shapes new form of mixed culture, reciprocally influencing each other. Intermarriage which is unavoidable hastens the mutual assimilation notably in dressing, cuisine, names, architecture (particularly mosques), language and writing (the calligraphy) and values. The theme of this year seminar is trying to elucidate this aspect of cultural mutual influences integration and assimilations between the great civilizations, not confining to this region but to other parts of the world, as well.
